What is under a Gwinnett house
Homes built before the mid-1970s around here mostly drain through cast iron inside and clay outside. Cast iron scales up and cracks along the bottom as it ages. Clay comes in short sections, so every joint is a seam, and tree roots find them. Homes from the 1980s on are mostly PVC, which does not corrode but can sag into a belly if the trench was poorly bedded. A camera is how you find out which you have and how much of it is still good.
Repair, trenchless, or replace
Spot repair. One broken joint or a short root-damaged section gets dug and replaced. This is the most common outcome and the least expensive.
Trenchless pipe bursting. A new pipe is pulled through the path of the old one, breaking it outward as it goes. Two small pits instead of a trench across the yard or driveway. It needs a line that is still roughly straight and ground that allows it.
Full replacement. When a line has failed in several places, or has collapsed, replacing the whole run is cheaper than chasing it one section at a time. The ground is opened, the old line removed, and the new line bedded, inspected and backfilled.
What a sewer job involves
Every dig starts with a Georgia 811 utility locate, which state law requires before any excavation. Permits and inspections are handled by us and billed at cost. A spot repair is usually a single day. A full replacement depends on length, depth and what is on top of the line.

How do I know if my sewer line is broken and not just clogged?
A clog clears and stays clear. A broken line backs up again within weeks, often in more than one drain at once, and may show as a wet or unusually green patch in the yard. The camera settles it either way.
Do you have to dig up my whole yard?
Usually not. Most failures are a single section, which is a spot repair. Where a whole line has to go, trenchless replacement keeps the digging to two small pits in many cases.
Is the sewer line my responsibility or the county's?
In Gwinnett and the surrounding counties the homeowner is responsible for the line from the house to the connection at the county main, including the part under the street in most cases. The utility maintains the main itself.
